B. R. Lakshman Rao  [translated by A. K. Ramanujan]

Summary :

The poem ‘Green Snake’ penned down by ‘B.R. Lakshman Rao’ speaks of the poet’s anguish as a small boy; as he stood and watched his parents kill a harmless snake that he wanted to save. The poet once lying quietly, spied a snake in a crack, under a block of stone, with its eyes sparkling and a forked tongue sweeping in and out, after swallowing a frog. It was a baby snake, just about two feet long. Knowing that green snakes are generally harmless, the poet told his father so. But his father opined that a snake was a snake and his mother joined in to voice her concern that the creature lay on the path frequented by all.

The poet refused to kill it but had to stand still and watch his father kill the innocent snake with a piece of firewood.
