This prose piece as the name suggests, is about Albert Einstein, about the person he was and the human side of this genius, “A truly Beautiful Mind” deals with Einstein and his life, focusing on his likes and dislikes and traces the events which played a role in making him the person we all know. It displays that men are not born great and helps to analyse what qualities in a person make them a genius.

Born on 14th March 1879, Einstein as a child showed no glimpse of his genius, on the contrary, he was a slow beginner, not learning to speak until he was nearly two and a half years old. Nicknamed “Brother Boring” by his playmates, Einstein usually played alone and was fascinated by mechanical toys. Even though a good pupil, Einstein felt stifled by the school’s regimentation and was constantly at odds with his teachers. At the age of 15, failing to bear it any more Einstein left the school for good. He continued his education in Switzerland, which was more liberal than Munich, and later he joined the university in Zurich. Einstein maintained this longing and desire for freedom from autocratic authority throughout his life. And it was one of the reasons which attracted him to Mileva Maric, for he saw an ally in her. Mileva and Einstein were married in 1903 but continuing domestic upheavals led to them separating in the year 1919.

Although Einstein faced quite a bit of turmoil in his private life, professionally he managed to soar to great heights. Beginning work as a technical expert in a patent office, Einstein kept developing his own ideas and by 1905 had published his Special Theory of Relativity. This was followed by another paper on Relativity in 1915. Einstein’s theories provided a new interpretation of gravity and for this he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921.

Einstein emigrated to the U.S when the Nazis came to power in Germany. His letter to American President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, warning of the disaster causing potential of an atom bomb, resulted in America working on the technology and subsequent bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Deeply shaken by the mass destruction, Einstein wrote a missive to the United Nations urging for the formation of a world government. But when this failed to elicit any response, Einstein used his popularity to campaign for peace and harmony. This peace loving free spirit, breathed his last in 1955, and till today is celebrated as a world citizen and visionary as much as a scientific genius.

He was a person of principles and stuck to his ideals even in the face of all odds. Rather than work in an environment that suppressed his thoughts, he preferred to strike out and find his own space.

In about 1938-39 the news of the discovery of nuclear fission by the Germans reached America leading to unrest among American physicists.
