“The Sound of Music” written by Deborah Cowley, tells the inspiring real life story of Evelyn Glennie. Born in 1965 in Scotland, Evelyn started losing her hearing from the age of eight due to gradual nerve damage and by the age of eleven she had completely lost her ability to hear. However she did not let this affect her life or work and instead worked to become one of the greatest percussionists of all times,

Evelyn might have lost her hearing at an early age but she refused to jet this disability rule her world and was determined to pursue her interest in music. Watching a girl play a xylophone made her want to play it too. While all her teachers discouraged her, it was percussionist Ron Forbes who spotted her talent and decided to teach her. Though she could not hear the sounds he played, she soon realized that she could make out different sounds produced by various instruments through their vibrations.

Standing barefoot and sensing different notes through various parts of her body, Evelyn began by learning to play drums. At the age of sixteen, Evelyn auditioned for the Royal Academy of Music and got accepted after scoring one of the highest marks in the glorious institution’s history. Through sheer hard work and determination she rose to become one of the leading percussionists of all times and was also successful in bringing percussion to the center of the Orchestra. She has many performances to her credit and her amazing skills always leave her audience spellbound.

In 1991 she was presented with the Royal Philharmonic Society’s prestigious Soloist of the Year Award. She has many other awards to her credit like Musical American Instrumentalist of the Year in 2003, Sabian Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006 and others. Other than the language of music, Evelyn also speaks English fluently and knows French and basic Japanese. Evelyn Glennie is an inspiration to deaf children all over because she is

living proof that they are not bound by their disability. With willpower and perseverance, they too can achieve what they set their sights on. Many awards and many achievements later, Evelyn Glennie still remains a down to earth and humble  person.

He tuned two large drums to different notes and asked Evelyn to try and sense their sound in some other way, rather than try to listen through her ears. He thus made her realize that she could feel the higher drum from the waist up and the lower one from the waist down, and also that she could sense different notes in different parts of her body. Thus Ron Forbes taught her to feel sound by her mind and body rather than by her ears.

2. Name the various places and causes for which Evelyn performs.

Ans. Evelyn performs at regular concerts and often goes on international tours, having a very hectic schedule. She gives high priority to classes for young musicians. Evelyn also gives free concerts in prisons and hospitals. Evelyn is a shining inspiration for the handicapped who are charged with confidence by her perseverance and success.

1.How does Evelyn hear music?

Ans. Evelyn hears music through the vibrations of each individual instrument, made by it while producing different notes. Different parts of her body sense the different notes and their vibrations. She says that she can feel the music pouring in through every part of her body. It makes her skin, hair and even cheekbones tingle. Usually while giving performances and during playing, Evelyn stands barefoot on a wooden platform, so that the vibrations can pass through her feet up her legs. When she plays the xylophone she can sense the sound passing up the stick into her fingers. And by leaning against drums while playing them, Evelyn can feel the resonances flowing into her body. Thus sensing the music through the sensations created by the instruments helps Evelyn ‘hear’ music and play it flawlessly.
