(a) Describe how Zitkala-Sa tried in vain to save her hair from being cut. Why did she want to save her hair?

Ans: Zitkala-Sa was given a terrible warning one late morning by her friend Judewin that she had overheard a paleface woman talk bout cutting their long, heavy hair. Among her community people, short hair was worn by mourners and shingled hair was worn by cowards. Her friend Judewin decided to submit but the narrator decided to rebel. She decided not to submit but to struggle. In an attempt to save her hair, she disappeared. She went in to a large room with three beds and crawled under one bed to hide herself. After sometime she heard footsteps nearyby which grew louder. Some people looked under the bed and dragged her out. She was-carried downstairs and tied fast in a chair where she faced extreme indignities. She felt like one of many little animals, driven by a herder, when her long hair was shingled like that of a coward. She. wanted to save her hair because among her people, only morners had short hair. Moreover shingled hair was worn by cowards. 

(b) What Bama’s attention while walking home from school? 

Ans : When Barna the narrator was studying in the third class, she hadn’t heard of people speaking openly of untouchability but she had only seen, felt and experienced the humiliation that one had suffered due to this social evil. The distance from her school to home could be covered in ten menutes but she took an hour. On her way she watched the games and fun that were going on. She also found interest in the performance of the monkeys and the snake charmer displaying his snakes. The other attractions that she observed on the way were the Maariyaatta temple, the pongol offerings being cooked, the fish stalls by the statue of Gandhi and the sweet and snack stalls.. She also stopped and saw how people of the political parties put up stage and cry through their mikes. A street play, a puppet show, or a stunt performance would also entertain her. She also stopped to see sights like people chopping. onions or almonds blown down by the wind and people selling vegetables, fruits and sweets. All these sights made her stop on the way and delayed return home. that her return home.

(c) How did the funny incident Barna saw on the way home suddenly transform into an incident sadness?

Ans : Barna on her way was home from school prolonged because she stopped to wait and observe the scenes and sights of the different happenings around the place. One day she saw a threshing floor near the street where the landlord was sitting to watch the proceedings. At that time an elder of the street came”” from the bazaar, carrying a small packet which contained vadai or green banana bhaji. He came along holding out the packet by its string without touching it. The elder bowing low to the landlord handed. the ‘packet to the landlord who began to eat. This incident amused Bama so much that she narrated the incident to Annan, her elder brotlter, who did not find it funny.

         The incident that had amused Barna had transformed into an incidennt of deep sadness when Annan, her brother told her that ‘the elder was from a low caste and so he couldn’t touch the food packet. When she heard it, she felt terribly sad. At the same time she was so angry that she wanted to touch the Vadais. She also wondered why poor people should show respect and bow to the cruel persons like the landlord and why the rich forget that others ate also human beings.

(a) Compare and contrast the stories narrated by Zitkala-Sa and Bama.

Ans : ‘Memories of Childhood’ are two autobiographical episodes of two women belonging to two different cultures. One is an American Red Indian woman and the other a contemporary. Tamil Dalit writer. Both are from marginalised communities who are victims of narrow prejudices.

    The stories of Zitkala-Sa and Bama can be compared in this respect that both features the struggle and fight against racial and social discrimination, They do not submit meekly to the oppression, exploitation and injustice. The story of Zitkala-Sa presents how an American Red Indian girl suffered extreme indignities while trying to retain her identity and distinct culture. She describes how she was dragged out, tied fast in a chair and grawed off her long hair. The story of Bama, a Tamil Dait writer presents how the people of low castes are never respected and honoured and have to carry for a high caste landlord a food packet by its string without touching it. In order to gain respect and position, she struggles hard and attains equality..

   The contrast in the stories lies in the fact that both the writers are from different cultures and both the writers handle their issues and struggle differently. Zitkala-Sa refuses to surrender by hiding under a bed to save her hair whereas Bama studies hard to attain equality. Zitkala-Sa revolted against the imposition of white man’s will on Indian Americans and Barna was pained at the injustice meted out to the Dealits. Thus of two different writers, Zitkala-Sa does not suggest a solution to the problem whereas Barna does.

(b) Discuss the form of discriminations projected in the narrations of Zitkala-Sa and Bama.

Ans : Zitkala-Sa and Barna project two major discriminations. One is a racial discrimination and the other a social discrimination. The racial  is suffered by Zitkala-Sa an America! Indian woman. She suffered in the hands of the white people of America who forcefully imposed their will on American Indian people Zitkala-Sa’s long hair was cut against her will and against the values of her community. Though she tried to struggle and fight against the imposition, she had no other choice but to surrender. She was also stripped of her shawl and she was embarrased because she felt that she was immodestly dressed. She was forced to surrender not only physically but also mentally.

        The other projected of discrimination is suffered by Barna. Bama a li major social evil which she herself experiences. It is untouchability. This evil is handled by Bama as a disease which paralyses a people not only physically but also socially and mentally: The positive aspect the story is that, Bama suggests appropriate solution to her problem in the story. In the story Bama was pained to see that the high-caste people treated the Dalits like the slaves. They were made to work for the landlords and they were not allowed to touch their food because they were untouchables. Barna felt it to be unfair and unjust for one human being to treat another human being unequally and with hatred. She even narrates an incident where an elder of the Village carried Vadais for the landlord without touching the food. Her brother Annan who understands the complete condition of the lower caste comes upon a solution that this social evil. can be removed from society only by education. Bama herself applies the suggestion of her brother and witnesses the change.
