Summary :

One night Dr. Benson was about to go to bed. The telephone rang. He answered. Mrs Sorley requested him to come and help her deliver her child. 

Dr. Benson was on his way to Sorley Farm in his car. He saw a man walking along the road in bad weather. He offered a lift to the man. 

The man did not behave properly with the doctor. The doctor did not like the man’s appearance. 

The man stole the doctor’s watch from his pocket. The doctor found it out and so the man, Evans, put back the watch into the doctor’s pocket. 

The doctor took out his pistol and sent the man out of his car and reached Sorley farm. 

The pregnant woman, Mrs Sorley had helped herself and delivered a baby. Mr. Sorley asked the doctor what time it was. The doctor took out his watch. It was not his. It was Evans’. 

The words on the watch surprised him.  Evans was a good man who saved the lives of three nurses at a certain night. Those three nurses presented that watch to Evans.

(a) Why did the doctor invite the man in ?

Ans: The doctor invited the man in the car because he was riding to the Sorley farm and the sight of a man walking alone along the country road, as seen just ahead by the lights of the car, was a welcome relief to the doctor He slowed down and looked at the man walking along with difficulty against the wind, a little package under his arm 

(b) How many cigarettes did the man take? Did the doctor like it? How do you know? 

Ans: The man took two cigarettes. No, because Doctor Benson unbuttoned his cost, then remembered the cigarettes in the outer pocket of his overcoat. He took out the packet and gave it to the rider who then looked in his own pockets for a match. When the cigarette was lighted. the man held the packet a moment, then asked, “Do you mind, mister, if I take another cigarette for later? The rider shook the packet to remove another cigarette without waiting for the doctor to answer Doctor Benson put his hand down quickly to receive the cigarettes and was a little irritated to find them already in his pocket. 

(c) What irritated the doctor about the man? 

Ans: Doctor Benson felt a hand touch his pocket. The man put the cigarettes back in his pocket Dostor Benson put his hand down quickly to receive the cigarettes and was a little irritated to find them already in his pocket.

Ans: Evans was a ambulance driver. He was going all the way to Detroit.

The appearance of Evans added to his suspicions that Evans was a thief. He felt that Evans had lied to him about being an ambulance driver. When he threatened Evans to put the watch back, the latter took out a watch from his own pocket and put it into the doctor’s. Later, the doctor took out the watch from his pocket to see the time. He realized that the watch had a broken dial and a cracked crystal. On turning the watch, he found an inscription that stated Evans was indeed associated with the ambulance department.

Ans: The doctor reached for his pistol to protect himself  from Evans. He drew out the pistol slowly and held it in the darkness at his side. Doctor Benson stopped the car quickly and pushed the nose of his gun into Evans’ side. 

2. What was Evans’ reaction? What did he do? 

Ans: Evans was scared. Evans put his hand in his own vest pocket and later, with trembling hands, tried to put the watch into the doctor’s pocket. With his free hand, Doctor Benson pushed the watch down into his pocket. He opened the door and forced the man out of the car. 

3. Why did the doctor turn Evans out of his car? 

Ans: When Benson searched his pockets to find his watch, he could not found it and immediately suspected Evans to be a thief. He took out his gun and asked the man to put out his watch. Evans was scared and did what he said. After that doctor kicked the man out of the car. 

4. Where was the Sorley farm? Who helped him reach it? 

Ans: The Sorley farm was up the mountain which was less difficult than he had feared and Ott Sorley had sent one of his older boys down the road with a lantern to help him across the old wooden bridge that led up to the little farm house.

Ans: No, the doctor have no difficulty with his patient. We know this by the statement :”Mrs. Sorley’s many previous experiences with bringing children into the world apparently helped her greatly because she delivered this child with little difficulty and there was no need on Doctor Benson’s part for the instruments in the long bag.” 6. How do you know that the doctor was relaxed after the baby was born? Ans:The doctor was relaxed after the baby was born because he took a cigarette and sat down to smoke.

Evan did so and left his car. It was when he reached the address of the lady and when they announced the birth of baby that he looked for the watch and took the watch closer to the light that he saw that the watch was actually not his but Evan’s and his name was printed on it.
