Ans: J.B. Priestley’s ‘Mother’s Day’ is a humorous and satirical play. But the play deals with some serious issues. The most important of them is the status of mothers in the family.

(i) The play was written more than fifty years ago in the 1950s. The position of mothers in the family was in every way in or to that of men. They were exploited and intimidated not only by their husbands but also by their children. It raises another issue. Mothers artwork in kitchen Cooking meals for the family. They iron the clothes. Ans: J.B. Priestley raises certain important issues particularly related to the mothers in his famous one act play ‘Mother’s Day’ Mrs Pearson is a typical mother. All the time she was busy with her husbands and children. She takes their orders as if she were their servant. She always stay at home but they fo out enjoying themselves. It is ruining her as well as her family. The important issue raised is that sons, daughters and husbands should take Notice of their mothers and wives.

Poor Mrs Pearson can’t muster enough courage. She doesn’t know how to deal with them. Doris has to order her mother to iron her yellow shirt. She gets angry with her mother when she doesn’t do it. Cyril is also angry with his mother because she doesn’t serve him tea. The poor mother has to put in twice the hours and gets no wages nor thanks for it. Mothers in the families are the most exploited. Drinking, smoking and playing cards are luxuries that such women can’t enjoy. When Mrs Pearson tries to enjoy such luxuries, she is considered ‘off colour’ or barmy Women must make their husband and children learn to help themselves 

Q.3. Is drama a good medium for conveying a social message? Discuss.

Ans: Certainly drama is a useful and forceful medium for conveying social messages. J.B. Pristley uses the dramatic art very convincingly to highlight certain issues. The main issue is the exploitation of housewives and more of the families. The play presents the plight of Mrs Pearson who has to dance to the tune of her husband George and her children Doris and Cyril. I lay ends with a social message that is of equality. Equal work for: and women. “Forty hour week for all now” says Mrs pearson (actually Ms Fitzgerals) J.B. Priestley effectively uses drama as a powerful medium. He uses it to highlight the profest of a mother against her exploitation by her children and husband. Mrs Pearson is helped by Mrs Fitzgerald. She knows how to change personalities through magic. Mrs Pearson and Mrs Fitzgerald are two contrasting characters in every way. The familial issues and Problems find a good expression through this drama. Mrs Pearson ran after her husband George and children Doris and Cyril. She takes their order as if they are the masters of the family and she is their servant. She always stays at home and they enjoy himself outside. Mrs Pearson’s daughter Doris in a pretty but spoilt girl. She is in her twenties. She asks her mother to iron her yellow silk. She also orders for tea to her mother. It must be ready. Cyril is Mrs Pearson’s son. He asks if his mother has put his things out. George Mrs Pearson’s husband spends most of his time at the clule. Mrs Pearson expects his wife to keep tea ready even though he doesn’t need it. unfortunately. Mrs Pearson works like a servant in her own family. She gets no wages for her work nor does anybody thank her for her services.

Summary of the Play

(1) It is afternoon. Mrs Pearson is sitting with Mrs Fitzgerald in her living room. Mrs Pearson is a pleasant but worried looking woman in her forties. Mrs Fitzgerald is older, heavier and has a stronger personality. They have sharply contrasting voices. Mrs. Pearson speaks in a light but Mrs Fitzgerald with a deep voice. Mrs. Fitzgerald has been telling Mrs Pearson’s fortune. She learnt this art from the East where her husband had served in the army.

(2) Mrs. Fitzgerald asks Mrs. Pearson to put her foot down once and for all. She should be the mistress of her own house. She must be the boss of her family. She runs after them all the time. She takes their orders as if she were their servant in the house. In this way, she is ruining herself and the family. Mrs. Pearson’s husband and her children should take notice of her Mrs. Pearson is timid. She can’t muster enough courage.

(3) Mrs. Fitzgerald tells Mrs Pearson that she will set her family right. Only they will have to change their personalities. She asks Mrs. Pearson to give her hand and keep quiet for a minute. They stare at each other muttering “Arshtatta dum Arshtatta………”. Their Personalities change bodies. Now Mrs Pearson becomes bold and dominating. Mrs Fitzgerald is nervous and timid. It is easier changing back. They can exchange their Personalities at will.

(4) Doris is Mrs Pearson’s daughter. She comes and asks her mother to iron the yellow shirt and asks for tea, Mrs Pearson replies that it is not ready. Doris becomes angry. Mrs Pearson reacts strongly. She scolds Doris. She also rebukes her for her boy-friend. Doris is nearly in tears.

(5) Cyril, Mrs Pearson’s son canes, demanded that all his things be taken out and ordered for tea. Mrs Pearson ignored him. Doris and Cyril are shocked to see their mother smoking and drinking. They are surprised at the sudden change that has come in their mother. They think that Perhaps he has gone’ ‘barmy’. But Mrs. Pearson advocates equal work for all she refuses to work even an hour more.

(6) George, Mrs Pearson’s husband comes: He is surprised to find her drinking stout. Mrs Pearson replies that she likes drinking for a change. Mrs Pearson taunted him that he was one of their standing Jokes. They called him Pompy-ompy-Pearson. George exits slowly, almost as if somebody has hit him over the head.

(7) Actual Mrs Pearson requests Mrs Fitzgerald that they must change back immediately. The drama has gone far enough. She can’t see her husband and children being so miserable. Again Mrs Pearson and Mrs. Fitzgeralc mutter as before and they come back to their original personalities. Mrs. Fitzgerald asks Mrs. Pearson that she shouldn’t be soft again. If she does not firm up, everything will go to waste. She should not give any explanation for what she has done.

(8) George, Doris and Cyril file in through the door. They look anxiously at Mrs Pearson, she smiles. She declared that they were going to play a family game of mummy. Then children would prepare supper while she would talk with their father. Everyone supported Mrs Pearson, she became the real mistress and boss of her family.
