Naturally there is no understanding between them. One does not appreciate the other’s feelings. In such a situation the father cannot but feel helpless.

Ans. The father realises that inspite of his difference with his son they must live on the same globe and in the same land. They cannot escape from the world. It is imperative for them to live in mutual understanding while. living in the same world. They should build up a friendly relationship for their own benefit. It is better to live like friends that antagonists in the same world.

Q. 6. Does the poem ‘Father to Son’ bear universal appeal? 

Ans. No doubt the poem bears universal appeal. The problem faced by the father and the son is not an isolated one. There are lots of examples of such strained relationship between father and son. Every father expects to get filial love in return to the sacrifices he makes in bringing up sons and daughters. There is generation gap that may cause minor difference. But that should not stand as insurmountable barrier between father and son’s love for each other. However, though sad, it has been happening.

About the poem:

The poem describes the personal experience of a father so far as his relationship with his son is concerned. In this sense the poem may be called an autobiographical one. But the truth contained in the poem is of universal appeal. The father and the son are two different persons brought up in different culture and prescring different values. The generation gap between the two are evident. Each of them think live quite differently, and naturally one does not know the other fairly well. Inspite of a story desire for reunion the separation continues and cannot be restored.

SUMMARY OF THE POEM

The poem ‘Father to Son’ is an autobiographical one. There is lack of understanding between the father and the son. The father is unhappy because he does not understand his own child. They have been living under the same roof for several years, yet the father does not know anything about him There is a gap of relationship between them. As a father he is eager to bai d the much needed relationship. Recollecting how his so was as a child the father feels himself a stranger. As father he gave birth to his son. But product such a son was like sowing seed in a land that did not belong to him. As there is no trace of understanding between them they are like strangers to each other. The son had been brought up as designed by the father. In spite of that the two failed to share love existing between them. The father wants his erring son to come back home to his father house, that is also his own house. He does not want his son moving in a different world. He wants him to return home and live with him in the same house. To create: a world of new love from the present ‘sorrow’ he is prepared to forgive nim. The father argues that there may be differences between them, but they have to live in the same in the same country, in the same world. The sad part is that they do not share each other’s sentiment and turned strangers. The father’s grief breeds anger and both of them are unhappy even though they want to reunite. Each wants that the other should forgive him. Disunity and lack of understanding are the root causes of their displeasure.
